SHAWINIGAN, QUEBEC- Jonathan Huberdeau netted a pair to lead the Sea Dogs to a 4-1 victory over Shawinigan at the Memorial Cup, putting Saint John in the tournament semi-final.
Stanislav Galiev and Ryan Tesink also scored.
Mathieu Corbeil made 30 saves for the win.
The game wasn’t without controversy. Leading 2-0 after the first period, Saint John appeared to score another goal on a jam play. Even though replay officials confirmed the puck was across the line before a whistle, the referee waived it off.
A fight and a number of scuffles closed the final couple of minutes prompting an over-the-glass shouting match between Sea Dogs Associate Coach Mike Kelly and Shawinigan’s Eric Veilleux.
The semi-final goes Friday against the winner of tonight’s tie-breaker between Shawinigan and Edmonton.
London gets a bye to the final game.
