SAINT JOHN, N.B. – Jim Quinn notes with a busy port comes noise.

The president and CEO of the Port of Saint John confirms they have been receiving complaints from residents in the south end and the lower west side, regarding noise from the loading dock at the American Iron and Metal Shredding plant.

Quinn says the port will speak to the people that run the metal operation here in Saint John to see if there’s any way to alter their loading practices.

He says it’s important for the port to talk to the operators because the production of the metal plant has drastically increased. “About five times a year you’re going to have a ship in here for ten to 14 days loading materials. So I just want to ask the question are there things that they can look at to see if they can approve and address the concerns that have been raised.”

The American Iron and Metal plant has expanded it’s facility and its’ shipments are expected to increased to 250-thousand tonnes of scrap metal a year.
