MONTREAL – Montreal Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin announced today the signing of Saint John Sea Dogs defenceman Nathan Beaulieu to a three-year, entry-level NHL contract.

Beaulieu finished tied for fifth in scoring among Quebec Major Junior Hockey League defencemen in the 2011-12 season, setting a Sea Dogs record with 52 points in 53 games.

This season, Beaulieu helped the Sea Dogs to their third consecutive Jean Rougeau Trophy as QMJHL regular season champions, as well as their second straight President’s Cup.

He was a nominee for the Emile Bouchard Trophy as QMJHL Top Defenceman for 2011-12, and a QMJHL Second-Team All-Star.

The 19-year-old native of Strathroy, Ontario, was picked by the Sea Dogs in the fourth round, 68th overall, in the 2008 QMJHL Entry Draft.

Beaulieu recorded 152 points in 233 games in four seasons in Saint John.

He added 48 points in 61 career playoff contests.

Beaulieu was a member of the 2011 Memorial Cup champion Sea Dogs.

He was Montreal’s first pick, 17th overall, in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.
