FREDERICTON, N.B.- Those interested in becoming a New Brunswick senator, will now have the chance to be elected.

Historic legislation will be tabled by the Alward government today that,if implemented, will see New Brunswickers elect the province’s nominees for the senate.

A draft copy of the proposed legislation was obtained by The Canadian Press.

The selection of nominees for current or expected vacancies within the next four years would take place during municipal elections.

The prime minister will receive the list but will have the final say on who becomes a senator.

Premier David Alward promised the election of Senate nominees last fall during the conservatives annual general meeting.

Of Canada’s 105 senators 10 represent New Brunswick.
