TORONTO- Picket lines could be going up at the Point Lepreau nuclear plant this morning.
Nearly 800 nuclear scientists, engineers, and technologists at Candu Energy will be in a legal strike position this morning.
This will include members of the Society of Professional Engineers and Associates at the Point Lepreau Nuclear Plant.
S-P-E-A president Peter White warns a strike could threaten the future of Canada’s nuclear industry as it will almost certainly guarantee the loss of technological talent. “If they don’t meet the industry standards they’re putting the whole industry at risk”, says White. “Not just what goes on at Candu but what goes on across the whole nuclear industry in Canada”.
White says it’s unlikely a contract will be reached in time.
The key sticking points in the labour dispute are wages and seniority.
