SAINT JOHN – The president of the local Bacchus Motorcycle Club has pleaded guilty to manslaughter in a deadly shooting earlier this month.
Matthew Thomas Foley, 50, pleaded guilty in court today to the shooting death of 31-year-old Michael Thomas Schimpf, outside the Bacchus clubhouse on Pitt Street on July 14.
Evidence introduced today included a video taken by cameras at the clubhouse, showing the legs of the victim walk into view.
Foley is seen pulling a gun from his side and walking out of the shot, and then returning minutes later to load the weapon.
Police do not believe Schimpf’s death was connected to any organized crime but do believe Schimpf and Foley knew one another.
Criminal Intelligence Service Canada considers Bacchus an outlaw motorcycle gang with ties to the Hells Angels.
Foley was originally charged with second-degree murder following his arrest a couple of days after the shooting.
He’ll be sentenced August 15th.
The clubhouse has since been shutdown after the Saint John Fire Department, through Saint John Police, issued a “Do Not Occupy” order on the facility.
A fire marshall noted structural and electrical issues with the building during the investigation.
Bacchus members cleaned out the clubhouse last week.
