SAINT JOHN, N.B.- A Saint John courtroom heard details yesterday surrounding the shocking July 14th shooting which left a 31 year old man dead on a south end street.
50 year old Matthew Thomas Foley, leader of the local Bacchus motorcycle club, pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the broad daylight shooting death of Michael Thomas Schimpf near the corner of Leinster and Pitt Streets.
Court was told circumstances surrounding the shooting yesterday.
The New Brunswick Telegraph Journal reports Schimpf showed up at Foley’s uptown tattoo shop, throwing rocks at him the day before the shooting.
Foley obtained a handgun and believed Schimpf was responsible for an incident days earlier where bricks were thrown through the shop’s window.
Foley told police he shot the victim after seeing him approach the bike club with his hands behind his back…adding he had no intentions on killing Schimpf.
At least eight shots were fired including one that hit the victim in the chest.
Foley, who was originally charged with second degree murder, will be sentenced August 15th.
