SAINT JOHN, N.B. – Saint John common council has asked its City Solicitor for a legal opinion about having mixed martial arts events held in the city.

Hoyco productions presented council with a letter asking to hold an event Monday night.

Councillor Bill Faren says he has not made his mind up yet on having MMA events take place in the city.

“There are a couple of councillors on this new council that believe progressive city’s should have events like this. My verdict is not in on this yet. There’s still new information coming out and I’m going to have to take it all in before making a decision.”

Farren says the idea of hosting an MMA event was presented to the last council.

They were told by the city solicitor that these kind of events were illegal in New Brunswick.
