MONCTON, NB – The Maritime Fisherman’s Union is requesting a four day delay to the start of the lobster fishing season in Southeast New Brunswick.
Christian Brun says that’s one of the directives that came from a meeting with elected MFU officials yesterday…
“It gives them more time to make sure they’re ready and have everything set up.” says Brun.
There’s no word from the DFO on whether the request will be granted.
Meanwhile, the MFU is requesting a meeting with the provincial fisheries minister to get some clear answers with respect to compensation.
They are also calling for a meeting with the premier to see what can be done to stem the flow of cheap lobster coming from south of the border.
A glut of Maine lobster is driving prices down so low that New Brunswick fishermen say it won’t be worth going out on the water.
