SHEDIAC, NB – About 150 lobster fishermen converged on a processing plant in Point Sapin yesterday – the latest in a series of blockades sparked by their discontent over lobster prices.
A deal reached by the province and the Maritime Fishermens Union late last week would see them get $2.50 a pound for canners and $3 a pound for market lobsters but the fishermen say it’s still not enough.
Provincial Fisheries Minister Michael Olscamp says negotiations are ongoing with the MFU but contrary to earlier reports of a 5-thousand dollars/fishermen compensation payment, no such offer has been made by his department.
The fishermen are reportedly planning to protest in front of the MFU office in Shediac today.
