MONCTON, NB – A tragic end to the weekend in the Elgin area where the body of a young woman was pulled from the river at Gibson Falls.
Elgin Fire Chief Gary Steeves tells us they were called out yesterday afternoon to retrieve the body, which was discovered by some kids in the area.
”Obviously she was walking down the river and got caught in between some rocks. It looks to us like the waves took her underneath and she couldn’t escape.” says Steeves.
Steeves says it’s possible the drowning could have occurred sometime overnight on Sunday.
The area is a popular party spot for teens and Steeves says he’s surprised they aren’t called out there more often.
“There have been at least six drowning-deaths in that area down through the years and I don’t understand why there’s not more of it… It’s a very dangerous spot.” says Steeves.
RCMP are asking for the public’s help in identifying the victim, who is described as being in her mid-30′s, with a dark complexion, black shoulder-length hair and brown eyes.
Corporal Christa Mitchell tells us the woman has two tattoos. “She has a large tattoo on her right calf that is described as a feather breaking apart into small birds. She has another tattoo on her right bicep that appears to be a chain around her arm with feathers hanging between the chain link.”
Anyone with information is asked to contact Caledonia RCMP at 387-2222.
