SAINT JOHN, N.B. – Judge R. Leslie Jackson will render his decision on the disclosure of search warrant information in the Richard Oland murder investigation by the end of September.
For seven hours yesterday, the judge heard from the lawyers representing the Oland family, the crown, media lawyer David Coles, and Constable. Stephen Davidson
While being cross examined by Coles, the chief investigator on the case confirmed the investigation is focused on one suspect and expressed is concern that the release of further information would taint the case and would prompt false confessions.
Coles says if the police only have one suspect in the case, there would be no need for them to believe false confessions that others may give.
“How do you reconcile that reality with saying ‘Look we have to keep this confidential to control potential false confessions”
Judge Jackson will render his decision on or before September 28th.
