FREDERICTON, N.B.- The New Brunswick government is changing the minimum age for small game hunters to 12 from 14.

The change takes effect September 1st.

Natural Resources Minister Bruce Northup says it was something the New Brunswick Wildlife Federation asked for in an effort to attract young people to hunting.

He says it conforms with federal legislation that allows 12-year-olds to obtain a minor’s possession permit for a firearm.

Changes to regulations for the Fish and Wildlife Act will permit youths between 12 and 15 to hunt small game and varmints while accompanied by an adult.

Before they can purchase a licence, they have to complete a firearm safety and hunter education course.
