SAINT JOHN, N.B. – A million dollar call was put out over the weekend to animal lovers across Saint John.

The SPCA Animal Rescue’s board of directors decided Friday evening they would close the doors of the shelter on Saturday September 8th if they couldn’t raise enough funds to support the organizations operational costs.

Shelter President Melody McElman tells Global News if the group can’t reach their goal, they will have to go to the public with one final request.

“We will have to find foster case homes. We’ll have to contact over SPCAs and appeal to the public to come get these animals. Otherwise we’re doing something that is completely against our philosophy which is euthanizing animals.”

An out-pouring of support was shown on the SPCA Animal Rescue’s animal rescue, from residents and businesses.

The organization reports $14,000 was raised over the weekend.
