SAINT JOHN, N.B.- An early morning gas leak led to an unexpected wake up call to several dozen south end Saint John residents this morning.

The strong stench of natural gas filled the air around the Courtney Bay Causeway this morning as emergency crews worked to fix a leak.

Around 4AM, city workers struck a 2 inch gas line at the intersection of Crown Street and King Street East.

Residents within a 3 to 4 block radius of the leak were evacuated.

Jarika lives on King Street East and says she was shocked when she was awakened by fire fighters. “As I got up we could smell and taste the gas, it was bizarre”, she said

As of 7AM, the leak had been pinched off.

Saint John Energy restored power to the area and the evacuees were allowed to return home.
