SAINT JOHN, N.B. – While executive director Sylvia Borsic has witnessed more male single parents taking part advantage of programs at the Saint John Family Resource Centre she notes the definition of a male lone parent is unclear in the latest 2011 Census data.

The number of male lone parent families went up in the Port City between 2006 and 2011 while the percentage of female lone parent families decreased.

Borsic says that the centre tries to make single parent programs more available to single male parents.

“Some of the dads who are working in more traditional, 9am-5pm type fields, they would be less likely to attend. We’ve tried to move our programming around so we have more programs on the evenings and on Saturdays and that’s where we’ve seen more male single parents taking part.”

She notes the new definitions of modern day families are as unique as the programs to educate them.
