SAINT JOHN, N.B. – Unanswered questions continue to plague the healing process for the family of Yifan Wang a year after his death.
The 17-year old Chinese exchange student had only been studying in Saint John for two weeks prior to an incident at the Canada Games Aquatic Centre that resulted in Wang being pulled, from the pool, unresponsive.
He died in the intensive care unit at the Saint John Regional Hospital September 20th, 2011.
William Zhong is a friend and spokesperson for the Wong family. He doesn’t understand what could have happened to leave Yifan unconscious in the pool. “He had professional training; he knew how to swim.”
Zhong notes he’s baffled by the length of the investigation into the death.
The Wang family has been in contact with Saint John lawyer Rod Gillis with plans to sue the Centre over the incident.
Aquatic Centre commission chair Colleen Kemp-Mitchell says the Centre is waiting for the coroner’s report, into the death, to be released before speaking about the incident or implement any necessary changes.
