The RCMP is investigating a credit card scam targeting car dealerships in New Brunswick.
The scam involves the purchase of vehicles over the phone using stolen credit card information.
Constable Sandy Savage with the J Division RCMP Commercial Crime section says several businesses have already fallen victim.
“There have been several businesses in Miramichi and Moncton, Saint John and Woodstock that we know of, but there could very well have been others that just haven’t been notified as of yet that this has occurred.”
Police say the fraudulently purchased vehicles have been traced back to Toronto and Halifax where they are being shipped out of the country.
The Mounties say they haven’t determined yet who is running the scheme.
Constable Savage says they are reminding businesses to be vigilant.
“Basically we’re trying to remind all businesses, not just car dealers, but any business that is taking credit card information over the phone, they they are are placing themselves at financial risk if they aren’t able to physically confirm the identity of the card holder.”
