FREDERICTON – New Brunswick RCMP say this province is the second-safest across Canada.

The Mounties say they released a report called Becoming Canada’s Safest Province which highlights RCMP crime reduction and prevention efforts, work with youth at risk of becoming involved in crime, and to combat organized crime and the drug trade.

The report says impaired driving charges increased by 6% from 1,216 to 1,301, and the number of people killed in collisions involving alcohol dropped from 33 in 2010 to 15 in 2011.

Meanwhile, investigative efforts led to a 49% increase in child exploitation related charges, and an 11% increase in drug enforcement charges.

RCMP say the results put New Brunswick behind only Ontario in the overall ranking.

The province was third last year.
