SAINT JOHN, N.B. – A new report this week prepared for the province’s chief coroner is calling for better control of firearms in known domestic violence situations.
The Silent Witness Project is a group which works to identify and honour women who are victims of domestic violence.
Spokesperson Doctor Deborah Doherty says guns should never be allowed in homes where there is a history of domestic violence.
“The fact that this person is hit and punched and beaten their wife means they should not have firearms in their homes because there’s a potential those firearms could come out and someone, if not both of them, could end up dead from a murder-suicide.”
The report says more than 37% of domestic violence victims were shot.
