SAINT JOHN, N.B.- Details on new firefighters contract may be known by the end of the week.
After months of negotiations between the city and its firefighters the arbitrator in the talks has finally made a decision which will include a wage increase for the firefighters.
Mayor Mel Norton tells News 88.9 the decision will have an impact on the city. “The decision has an impact on increasing wages so that has a financial impact on the community”, says Norton.”We’re looking into what the scope of that impact is right now”.
Norton says further cuts to the fire department aren’t currently on the table but are possible. “That’s a consideration that we’d have to look at depending on the outcome of the financial review. We have to first of all understand what that amount is. It’s not something we’re looking at at this point”.
At least one city councillor says he is concerned by the arbitrators decision and what it will mean for the city.
