GRAND MANAN, N.B.- The Bay of Fundy lobster season got underway this morning with some good news from the federal fisheries minister.
Gail Shea granted a temporary freeze on license transfers as she reviews the situation which led to angry confrontations and blockades earlier this week on Grand Manan.
Melanie Sonnenberg is Project Manager with the Grand Manan Fisherman’s Association. “So what we hope that will bring is some order to the fishery which presently I don’t think we’re going to see the way things are going right now and we certainly didn’t see that last spring”, says Sonnenberg. “We’ve got to bring this back to some kind of orderly fishery”.
Sonnenberg says tempers might remain high on the water today after vessels in Meteghan and Digby Nova Scotia were given a bit of a head start on the season today
