MONCTON, NB – A movie based on a school van crash that killed seven high school basketball players from Bathurst airs Sunday on CBC.
The film, titled “The Phantoms” focuses on how the Bathurst High boys team captured a provincial basketball title just 13 months after the horrific crash, which claimed the lives of seven team members along with the coach’s wife.
Several mothers whose sons were killed in crash have fought to block the film’s production saying it’s insensitive and does not honour the memory of their sons.
But Rick LeGuerrier says he’s proud of the film and the sensitive approach they’ve taken in telling the story.
He says although references are made to the tragedy, the crash is not depicted in the film.
Bathurst Mayor Stephen Brunet supports the movie, which he says is about how people picked up the pieces after the tragedy and carried on.
The phantoms airs Sunday on CBC.
