SAINT JOHN, N.B.- One Saint John councillor is calling for less City Hall management and more front line workers.

Common Council voted to approve the hiring of five management positions.

Councillor Donnie Snook was one of three people to vote against the move.

He says the city has it wrong and what we really need are more front line workers and fewer managers. “We’ve got a ten million dollar City Hall management budget”, says Snook. “I think, yeah, hire a few bus drivers maybe and deliver front-line services. I hear no-way. Right size the place, not the other direction, adding, adding, adding, adding to our establishment”.

Councillors Bill Farren and Ray Strowbridge also voted against the motion.

Councill John Mackenzie says the the positions have to be filled to keep the city running. “We’re asking for five key positions and without these positions the city doesn’t function very well. These are not positions you are able to do away with and not fill. At some point you have to have somebody running the city and those chairs can’t be empty”.
