SAINT JOHN – Mayor Mel Norton says he would like to see a new four-plex hockey rink build in the city if it makes financial sense to do so, by closing down some of the current city rinks that need major repairs.
One of the locations being considered is Long Wharf – the same location where Irving Oil looked at building its world headquarters.
The spokesperson for the International Longshoremen’s Association, Pat Riley, says
he has concerns about building a four-plex at Long Wharf.
“Like everybody else, I’d be in favour of it as long as we can afford it,” Riley says. “And, of course, because it’s being built on on Long Wharf, I certainly have reservations about the location.
Riley says no one from the port or the city has talked to him about the idea.
He says it could affect the city’s cruise industry and other activity at the port.
