SAINT JOHN, N.B. – Saint John’s need for affordable housing and community sustainability projects took the spotlight during an event hosted by the Human Development Council and Safe Harbour.
Over 100 high school students descended upon the Chinese Commerce Centre to talk about the pressing issues facing the city on National Housing Day.
Community Developer Celeigh Barber-Russell says it’s important to talk to your about the issues surrounding affordable housing in the city as youth are more likely to experience homelessness.
“One in five kids from age 16 to 24 might be homeless in their life in this city. They are a vulnerable demographic.”
Barber says the top three vulnerable demographics for homelessness in Saint John are youths, singles with income under $10,000, and those suffering from mental illness and addiction.
