MONCTON, NB – A senior should be able to live in their own home and community safely, independently and comfortably.
That message comes from the Coalition for Seniors and Nursing Home Residents’ Rights in a new report released today.
Executive director Cecile Cassista says she’s concered the province will decide to once again seize assets of seniors to determine nursing care fees.
“If we don’t keep on the toes of the government, they will bring it back. Because they gone 38 percent for nursing home fees already and it’s really making us all nervous that they may go in that direction,” says Cassista.
Cassista says the province needs more facilities which promote independent living such as People’s Park Tower in Moncton.
The report also calls for public home care, better working conditions for home support workers, better protection for seniors under the jurisdiction of the Ombudsman and a 1-800 number for seniors to access government programs and services.
