SAINT JOHN, N.B. – Susan Fullerton is once again urging city police to address the prostitution issue in the uptown core.
The passionate councillor addressed the Board of Police Commissioners last night at their new headquarters inside Peel Plaza.
Fullerton told the board that she would like to have the prostitutes moved to the back of Agar Street, off of Waterloo Street, even offering to host a lunch for the prostitutes if they would agree to move.
She added business owners and residence in the Waterloo Street, Cliff Street, and Cobourg Street areas have had to put up with the displeasure of noise and finding used condoms and needles for a long time.
Dr. Leslie Jeffrey, president of Aids Saint John, says she cannot even imagine the consequences. “I think about Agar Street at night and I would be scared to walk through there. I mean, again, you’re talking about a community that’s already targeted for violence. The assaults, the beatings, the rapes; it’s awful.”
Fullerton made a motion at a recent council meeting that asked the police chief to use city bylaws to remove prostitutes from uptown Saint John.
Bill Reid is expected to report back to the police commission with his suggestions on how to address this issue.
