FREDERICTON, N.B. – The CEO of MADD Canada says young people are going to die if the New Brunswick government eliminates an overnight restriction for new drivers.
Andrew Murie says the change proposed by the provincial government is misguided.
Public Safety Minister Robert Trevors introduced legislation last week that would remove a restriction preventing novice motorists from driving between midnight and 5am.
Trevors says it is an inconvenience for young drivers. “In this change with the graduated drivers program we need to get all of our young and new drivers prepared for all elements.”
Former Liberal premier Shawn Graham made a rare speech in the legislature today saying half of all teenaged motor vehicle deaths occur between 9pm and 6am.
He says the Tory government needs to do the right thing and withdraw the legislation.
