FREDERICTON, NB– The Fredericton Regional Solid Waste Commission is turning garbage into electricity.
Starting today, two power generators that capture methane gas produced from decomposing garbage in the Fredericton landfill are supplying electricity to the NB power grid.
In a statement, Gord Wilson, the Commission’s General Manager, says they are producing 2.1 megawatts of energy, or enough to power about 2,000 homes.
He says the project is eliminating about 45,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas a year.
Wilson says the project has cost the commission $6.4 million and was done without government grants or subsidies.
