FREDERICTON – About 100 people staged a demonstration outside the provincial legislature today to voice their displeasure for the federal government’s omnibus budget legislation.
Members of the St. Mary’s First Nation banged drums and sang on the front steps of the house.
Spokeswoman Angela Acquin says rights of First Nations people will be taken away under the legislation.
She says the demonstration is their way of showing support for the hunger strike of Chief Theresa Spence of the Attawapiskat First Nation in northern Ontario.
Spence stopped eating a week ago in an effort to get the government to show more respect for aboriginal treaties.
Two of the Fredericton demonstrators were told to leave after attempting to get into the public gallery of the legislature.
