SAINT JOHN, N.B.- The city has agreed to spend 2.4 million dollars over the next two years to cover the entire cost of long term disability insurance for its sick and injured workers.
Common Council made the decision in a secret emergency meeting Thursday afternoon.
The meeting was needed to move to a shared risk pension model with the legislature approving the amendments before ending it’s fall session yesterday.
Councillor Donnie Snook wasn’t part of the vote and says he wouldn’t have supported it. “I think it’s absolutely ridiculous”, says Snook. “It is,to me, unheard of for the city or the employer to be paying one hundred percent of the cost even if it is just the bridging or short term arrangement”
It’s not known if the city unions have given their blessings to the deal.
