Sanitary landfill officials in the Maritimes are issuing a few friendly reminders as people open their gifts over the holiday season.

Brenda MacCullum of the Fundy Region Solid Waste Commission in Saint John says wrapping paper for the most part is not recyclable.

“Wrapping paper, unfortunately, has to go in the garbage.  We always promote using something different, like gift bags or brown paper.  Brown paper can be recycled, and it can look really nice.”

MacCullum also says styrofoam must also go in the regular garbage.

People are also encouraged to compost as much as possible, since there is usually more food waste generated over the holidays.
