SAINT JOHN, N.B. – An early morning fire at 278 Duke Street West is not being treated as suspicious.

The Saint John Fire Department received the call about a structure fire at the apartment building around 7:15AM.

The fire was quickly knocked down and contained to the upstairs apartment where it’s believed the fire started.

Platoon Chief Joe Armstrong says crews were concerned about the fire spreading. “With these older homes there’s so much open air spaces especially with the attic over top of the apartment. So crews checked for extension with thermal imaging equipment and everything was ok.”

The investigation into the fire is continuing.
