SAINT JOHN, N.B. – A former premier of New Brunswick is hoping the province will realize the great potential shale gas exploration can bring.
Frank McKenna spoke at a Saint John Board of Trade luncheon today after hearing of the dire economic state New Brunswick is in.
He says New Brunswick has a number of opportunity ropes to grab. “To start with I believe the west-east pipeline is one of those ropes. Then on the natural gas side I believe the reversal of the Repsol facility would create huge economic activity. Then if we could start exploiting our shale resources that could create extraordinary economic activity.”
McKenna adds if New Brunswick takes advantage of its’ estimated 82 trillion cubic feet of shale gas deposits, it could see $7-billion in revenue, which could wipe out the majority of the province’s debt.
The province government is expected to release an oil and gas blueprint this spring.

these people dont care about us,our children or our environment. we cant let them take what little it seems we have left here in NB…..i hope enough people stand up against this non-sense. i think everyone in saint john should read up on what fracking is and how it’ll destroy our environment!
shame on these money hungry corporations&politicians. there’s no price on our environment and the health and life quality the citizens of this province deserve. Id never take advice from a politician ,in fact i usually do the opposite, its safe to say none of these people truly care about the “little people”,only the banks and big businesses and how quickly they can fatten up their own wallets. And i am pretty sure trades were removed from school because the government doesn’t want a country full of intelligent independent people….it wants a country full of dumb reliant citizens who cant screw in a light bulb on their own!
This is the same man that took all of the Trades out of the High Schools and wanted everyone to be computer savey.
Now, we don`t have anyone who can fix a toilet or run new lights in your home.
Remember that, he works for one of the biggest banks in the World and by the sounds of this report he `s just trying to drum up new revenue.
He doesn`t give a damn about your water table or the pollution that ” Fracking ” will cause to the water. Did you notice I said ” WILL ” cause pollution and not ” Could ” cause it.?
Don`t listen to this B.S. as Frank doesn`t reside in N.B. anymore and for sure won`t be moving back anytime soon. Especially if “Fracking” turns into the new revenue supply for N.B.
DON`T LET THEM GET AWAY WITH THIS. The time has come to stand up to these money grabbers and tell them exactually where they can put the hydraulic fluid that they want to poison your water with.
Time to grow a ‘set’ New Brunswick and take control of your` and your kids futures.
Do not be fooled again people.
He was never right in the past and he is wrong on this issue. Maybe he will test drink the water this industry will destroy to ensure it is safe. Sometimes I wonder what these politicians use to think with.
