MONCTON, N.B. – The shock of the Pope’s resignation has reached New Brunswick.
Reverend John Perkins, the university chaplain at Mount Allison, says he was caught off guard by the news from the Vatican this morning.
He notes the past two popes have been fairly conservative and he is interested to see what kind of change a new Pope will bring.
“Typically, whether we’re talking papacy or politics, it’s usually not the successor of someone very conservative but the second successor who brings about significant change. So I’m kind of excited to see what change, if any, we will see under a new papacy.”
The college of Cardinals will reconvene to elect a new Pope by the end of March.
