SAINT JOHN, N.B. – The debate regarding Sunday shopping has once again resurfaced.
The Retail Council of Canada wants rules restricting retail business hours on Sundays thrown out.
Saint John councillor Shirley McAlary, who was mayor at the time the rules were put in place for Sunday shopping, says she remembers the debate well.
“Oh yes, people didn’t want them opened and people thought it was wrong to do so. Also employees weren’t interested in working on Sundays so it caused a lot of problems in the beginning.”
Moncton, Dieppe and Riverview have all removed their Sunday shopping bylaws.

Most of North America the stores are open all day Sunday, not in backwards New Brunswick. Also boxing day is the busiest shopping day of the year in the developed world, but in New Brunswick CLOSED.
