SAINT JOHN, N.B.- We now know where it started but still no cause of a major fire on Mecklenburg Street in the city’s south end.

The blaze started in a vacant building and spread to a nearby structure leaving 16 people homeless.

Mark Wilson is a divisional chief with the Saint John Fire Department. “The exact cause of the fire is classified as undetermined until further information comes forward”, says Wilson. “We have an area of origin that was determined to be in the vacant building in the lower level basement area”.

Wilson says the building did have power and was boarded up and secure when the fire broke out.

Fire investigators say arson was not a cause of the fire
