(Saint John)-A jury has returned with several recommendations following a more than three day inquest looking into the death of a 17 year old Chinese student almost a year and a half ago.

Yi Fan Wang died from injuries sustained during a public swim at the Canada Games Aquatic Centre in September of 2011.

The two woman, two man jury has called Wang’s death an accidental drowning.

It is recommending, among other things, additional lighting in the deep end of the pool, phones for lifeguards at key locations, an additional lifeguard in the pool’s shallow end and province wide standards for lifeguards.

SAINT JOHN, N.B.- The city is closely monitoring weather conditions as southern New Brunswick prepares for a deluge of rain over the next couple of days.

A rainfall warning is in effect with some areas in the Fundy region forecasting up to 120 millimetres.

Kevin Rice, the Deputy Commissioner of Municipal Operations, says the influence of the tides can have a big impact on flooding. “Especially in low lying areas, especially Glen Falls and the Fairville Boulevard area”, says Rice. “One of the things we cannot control is the tidal influences based on the rain’s frequency and intensity”.

Residents in low lying areas are being asked to check eaves troughs, catch basins and ditches for debris.

The city will also be closely monitoring water quality in Latimer Lake and Spruce Lake.

It’s going to be a soggy weekend across southern New Brunswick.

Environment Canada has issued a rainfall warning for both Moncton and Saint John with showers expected to begin today and heavy rain forecasted to start this evening and to continue off and on throughout the next few days.

Total rainfall amounts in our part of the province could exceed 100 mm by the time the stalled low pressure system finally moves out of the region early next week.

Meteorologist Richard Zurawski says it’s a lot of rain, but not an uncommon occurrence this time of year.

“I might say that it’s pretty typical of spring weather in the maritimes. You can count on pretty much one or two of these disturbances stalling over the maritimes and giving us this kind of rainfall.”

Zurawski says the rain could accumulate very quickly and drivers should be aware of localized flooding on the roads and the risk of hydroplaning.

Temperatures accompanying the system are expected to be mild, but still slightly below daytime normals for this time of year.
