SAINT JOHN – There’s a happy ending to story you may have heard about earlier today on News 88.9.

Tara the Alaskan Malamute dog has been found and reunited with her owner.

Acting on a tip received, dog owner Elad Shalom accompanied police to a home.

A person in the home admitted to taking the animal and surrendered the dog in the presence of police.

Shalom had offered a one thousand dollar reward for the return of the dog, and has now donated that money to the SPCA.

Speaking earlier Friday on the Todd Veinotte Show, Shalom said his animal was lost a few days ago.

After placing ads on various websites seeking assistance, he was contacted by an unknown person who claimed the dog was taken from Shalom because of mistreatment of the animal.

Shalom denied the allegations.

TORONTO – Here is the full text of Toronto Mayor Rob Ford’s statement Friday afternoon in which he denied he uses crack cocaine. Ford also addressed the players of the football team at Don Bosco Catholic Secondary School, where he was dropped Thursday as coach.

Well, good afternoon everyone. I’d like to take this opportunity to address a number of issues that have circulated in the media over the last few days. There has been a serious accusation from the Toronto Star that I use crack cocaine. I do not use crack cocaine, nor am I an addict of crack cocaine. As for a video, I cannot comment on a video that I have never seen or does not exist. It is most unfortunate, very unfortunate, that my colleagues and the great people of this city have been exposed to the fact that I have been judged by the media without any evidence. This past week has not been an easy one. It has taken a great toll on my family and my friends and the great people of Toronto. For the past week, on the advice of my solicitor, I was advised not to say a word. I want to thank the people of this great city for their outpouring of support.

The past few days have also ended a long relationship with Don Bosco. I would like to thank and congratulate all the young men that I’ve had the opportunity to coach and improve their lives in the last 10 years at Don Bosco. I will continue to support Don Bosco in spirit and I wish them great success for their upcoming season. These kids are phenomenal kids who have bright futures and can do anything if they put their mind to it.

I would like to assure everyone that we are continuing to fight for the taxpayers every day and it’s business as usual at city hall. This administration is turning the corner and I will continue to do what the great people of the city elected me to do and that was to keep taxes low, to improve customer service, and to reduce the size and cost of government and invest in our infrastructure.

I would also like to thank my former chief of staff Mark Towhey for his service and all the work that he has done. Again, I’d like to repeat: I can’t thank the people enough of Toronto for their support and being there and calling me and emailing me every single minute of this day. I would also like to thank you for being here today but most importantly folks, we have, I have, the city has the best deputy mayor in Doug Holyday that anyone could ever ask for. I want to thank Doug for being here and I want to thank my best friend, and I love him dearly, my brother Doug, for having to go through this nonsense. Thank you very much.

TORONTO – The Rolling Stones have a global reputation as one of the greatest rock bands of all time, but the particularly long-standing relationship the group has maintained with Canada has been one of mutual satisfaction.

Since the day when Canada kickstarted the band’s first major North American tour, the country has played a prominent role in the band’s mythology and been the source of both career highs and personal lows.

Legendary albums, secret shows and public scandals have all taken shape on Canadian soil and contributed to the Stones’ larger-than-life reputation.

“It is a very special relationship that they have to Canada,” rock music historian John Einarson said in a telephone interview from Winnipeg. “… It’s been very kind of hot and cold.”

The Rolling Stones’ affiliation with Canada dates nearly all the way back to the early days of their career as international superstars.

While they had played the U.S. in the early 1960s, Einarson said they didn’t embark on a major North American tour until the wave of English musicians known as the British Invasion had gained popularity on the other side of the Atlantic.

That tour got under way in Montreal on April 23, 1965, Einarson said, adding the Canadian leg was distinctive for its mix of venues. Mick Jagger and company found themselves alternating between selling out major stadium shows and playing to crowds crammed into an amusement park or a YMCA auditorium, he said.

Since then, Canada has been a frequent stop on Stones’ tours and a common destination for private band rehearsals.

Einarson said Toronto has been a particularly popular retreat thanks to Michael Cohl, the high-profile theatre and concert promoter who has been handling the band’s arrangements for nearly four decades.

Many of the group’s Canadian highlights have unfolded in its largest city.

Einarson said the Stones had a penchant for booking small venues under assumed names and treating fans to impromptu concerts in a more intimate setting than they might otherwise experience.

One of those escapades, however, turned into one of the group’s most eventful chapters.

A visit to Toronto in March 1977 yielded one of the band’s best-selling live albums, but also plunged the group into personal scandal.

Two nights’ worth of stealthily organized shows at the El Macambo provided half the material for the album “Love you Live,” which went gold in the U.S. and reached number 3 on the U.K. charts.

But the shows were overshadowed by the presence of Margaret Trudeau, wife of then Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau. She latched onto the group during their stay and purportedly got especially cozy with band member Ronnie Wood.

“She ended up going with them to the gig and being really groupie-like,” Einarson said. “Being very obvious that she was with the Stones and was part of their entourage … She was really kicking up her wild oats.”

The scandal grew further when guitarist Kieth Richards was arrested by the RCMP and charged with possession of heroin for the purpose of trafficking.

In his autobiography “Life,” Richards recalled that he was facing the prospect of hard jail time if convicted. He lined up Canadian celebrity character witnesses such as Dan Aykroid and Lorne Michaels, but in the end caught a break from a judge he praised in no uncertain terms.

Einarson said “the verdict was guilty, but the judge concluded, ‘I will not incarcerate him for addiction and wealth.’ He must be freed, said the judge, to get on with his treatment, with a condition. He will perform a concert for the blind. Very intelligent, I thought. The most Solomon-like judgment that had been handed down in many a year.”

The fundraising concert went ahead in April, 1979 in Oshawa, Ont. with more than $50,000 going toward the Canadian National Institute for the Blind.

Since then, the Stones have returned to the Toronto area on many occasions and even produced another live album, “Light the Fuse.”

Their most notable reappearance took place in 2003 when the band agreed to lead the effort to rejuvenate the city’s flagging tourism industry, which was ravaged by the outbreak of SARS earlier that year. The group became one of the headlining acts of Sarsstock, a giant outdoor festival that featured such other rock luminaries like AC-DC and Rush.

Einarson said the Stones’ willingness to participate in the show stands as proof of the affection band members have come to feel for the city.

“That was a real nod from the Stones to how much they felt about Toronto to do that,” he said. “They weren’t on the road or anything at the time, they just kind of came back and did it.”

For Toronto residents eager to take in another Rolling Stones gig, time is on their side. The band is set to play two sold-out shows at Toronto’s Air Canada Centre on May 25 and June 6.

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The price of oil fell two per cent this week as oil traders worried about global demand and shared the stock market’s concerns about possible changes to the U.S. Federal Reserve’s economic stimulus program.

The loss Friday was just 10 cents, to US$94.15 a barrel. But four straight losses resulted in a weekly decline of $1.87 a barrel for benchmark West Texas Intermediate crude.

The global economic picture was clouded by weak manufacturing data from China. That raised questions about the strength of oil demand in the world’s No. 2 economy. In the U.S., a report from the Energy Department showed the country is well-supplied with oil, while gasoline demand remains below year-ago levels.

One question overhanging the market is what the Federal Reserve’s next moves will be with its monetary policy. Recent comments from Fed policy-makers, including chairman Ben Bernanke, raised concerns that the Fed will scale back effort to support the economy sooner than traders had expected.

The uncertainty led U.S. stock markets to their first weekly loss in a month. Oil tracked stocks for most of the week, as oil traders looked to their equities counterparts for clues on how to react to the Fed.

Brent crude, a benchmark for many international oil varieties, rose 20 cents to US$102.64 a barrel Friday on the ICE Futures exchange in London.

In other energy futures trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange, wholesale gasoline rose one cent to US$2.84 a U.S. gallon (3.79 litres), heating oil was flat at US$2.86 a gallon and natural gas fell two cents to $4.24 per 1,000 cubic feet.

(TSX:ECA), (TSX:IMO), (TSX:SU), (TSX:HSE), (NYSE:BP), (NYSE:COP), (NYSE:XOM), (NYSE:CVX), (TSX:CNQ), (TSX:TLM), (TSX:COS.UN), (TSX:CVE)

MONTREAL – Small strikers with quick feet will be the focus of attention when the Philadelphia Union visit the Montreal Impact on Saturday night.

The Union’s Jack McInerney leads Major League Soccer with eight goals for fifth-place Philadelphia, while fourth-place Montreal’s Marco Di Vaio is among a group of three players with six goals, although the Impact striker has played two fewer games.

The five-foot-10 McInerney, a 20-year-old known as Jack Mac, is having a breakout season in his third year as a pro since he was drafted seventh overall out of high school in 2010 by the Union.

His speed around the goal and ability to get open is similar in style to the 36-year-old Di Vaio, who is listed at five foot 11.

McInerney will likely be a handful to veteran Montreal centre backs Alessandro Nesta and Matteo Ferrari.

“It’s important that our defence marks him well because he’s doing very well,” said Montreal midfielder Patrice Bernier. “He has good movement and he’s very fast.

“It will be a difficult game for Alessandro and Matteo. We’ll need to play a strong game. They’ve won three times away, so it’s a dangerous team.”

Philadelphia (5-4-3) has been hard to read this season, going 3-2-1 away and 2-2-1 at home. They are coming off a three-game stretch in which they lost 4-1 at home to Los Angeles between a pair of 1-0 wins over Chicago.

The Impact (6-2-2) are 4-0-1 on home turf. In their last MLS outing at Saputo Stadium, they pulled out a 3-2 win over Salt Lake on May 11 on late goals from Di Vaio and Ferrari.

Nesta is due to return from a nagging adducter injury to bolster the central defence, but questions remain for the fullbacks.

Jeb Brovsky, who along with goalkeeper Troy Perkins has played every minute of every game this season, is a question mark after breaking his nose in six places in a 0-0 draw with Vancouver in Voyageurs Cup play on May 15.

Fullback Hassoun Camara left practice early on Thursday for reasons unclear, while Maxim Tissot of Gatineau, Que., who made his first MLS start at right back against Salt Lake, is out for two to three weeks with a fractured toe.

Brovsky got patched up and finished the game against the Whitecaps and then went for surgery. He trained this week in a face mask, although he had to clear it of fog with a towel at intervals.

Coach Marco Schallibaum called Brovsky a warrior. That got no argument from Bernier.

“It looks a bit awkward, but Jeb is a guy who is not going to quit,” Bernier said. “You could see when he broke his nose he wanted to get the operation right away.

“Some people would have missed three or four weeks and he’s already available to play on Saturday. It might hinder him a bit, but not enough to affect his play. He may have to wipe the fog off on the sideline, like a hockey player.”
Schallibaum expects Camara to be ready, and Dennis Iapichino is available at left back.

The Impact were on a 10-day break in their schedule, which was useful as midfielder Felipe Martins recovered from passing kidney stones.

Schallibaum does not announce his starting 11, but from practice this week it appeared he would stick to his recent preference for a two-forward lineup, pairing Andrew Wenger with Di Vaio even though the two have shown no chemistry.

Forward Daniele Paponi, Di Vaio’s former Bologna teammate, is out with a hamstring injury along with midfielders Andrea Pisanu (hamstring) and captain Davy Arnaud (concussion).

The Union will have defender Jeff Parke, their off-season acquisition from Seattle, back after he missed three games with a sore hamstring. His return allowed them to trade defender Bakary Soumane to Chicago this week for a second round draft pick and allocation money.

Up front, McInerney teams with veteran Sebastien Le Toux, who is back in Philadelphia after splitting last season between Vancouver and the New York Red Bulls.

“They’re a very solid team,” Di Vaio said of the Union. “They won three games away, so that must help them here, in the head.

“They have good strikers. It’s not an easy game.”

Note: Forward Sanna Nyassi has been called in by Gambia’s national team for World Cup qualifying games against Ivory Coast and Morocco and will be away June 3-17. He will miss a game June 15 against Columbus.

WASHINGTON – Government health officials are investigating cases involving patients who suffered complications after being injected with potentially contaminated medications made by a Tennessee specialty pharmacy.

The Food and Drug Administration said Friday the problems involve seven patients who received steroid injections from Main Street Family Pharmacy, a compounding pharmacy in Newbern, Tenn.

Tennessee health officials said the pharmacy has agreed to recall all of its sterile products, which are generally injectable prescription drugs. Officials from the FDA and the Tennessee Department of Health have been inspecting the Newbern pharmacy since Wednesday.

“The pharmacy staff and management have been co-operative,” state regulators said in a news release.

An employee reached at Main Street Family Pharmacy on Friday afternoon could not immediately provide comment.

The injections contain methylprednisolone acetate, the same drug at the centre of last year’s deadly outbreak of fungal meningitis. More than 55 people have died and over 740 others have been sickened after receiving contaminated injections from a Massachusetts compounding pharmacy. The steroids are typically used to treat pain.

Federal authorities have identified five cases in Illinois and two more in North Carolina. The five patients from Illinois had skin infections in the hips and buttocks while at least one patient in North Carolina appears to have a fungal infection, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“There’s no indication at this time of meningitis or other life threatening infection,” said Joseph Perz, a health-care epidemiologist helping to lead the CDC’s investigation.

The FDA recommends doctors stop using any sterile drugs distributed by the pharmacy immediately.

Main Street Family Pharmacy is a compounding pharmacy, which means it mixes custom formulations of drugs based on doctors’ specifications. Compounding pharmacies have long operated in a legal grey area between state and federal regulations. Since last year’s outbreak, the FDA has stepped up inspections of compounding pharmacies across the country, triggering several national recalls of potentially contaminated medications.

The Tennessee Department of Health said it’s too early to tell how many people may have received the injections under scrutiny. According to pharmacy records the drug was shipped to medical facilities in 13 states: Alabama, Arkansas, California, Florida, Kentucky, Illinois, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas

The Main Street Family Pharmacy was licensed by the Tennessee board of Pharmacy in 1985, and later licensed as a manufacturer and distributor in 2010.

Compounding pharmacies have long been overseen by state pharmacy boards, with regulations varying widely from state to state. Over the last 20 years some compounding pharmacies have grown into larger business, operating more like manufacturers by shipping thousands of doses of drugs across state lines. The FDA has occasionally tried to assert its authority over these operations, though it has repeatedly been challenged in court by pharmacy owners.

Legislation moving through Congress would give the FDA direct oversight over these so-called compounding manufacturers, with the aim of preventing future national outbreaks tied to compounded medications. While Republicans and Democrats in the Senate have coalesced around a bill, the House has not reached any such agreement.
