Rothesay bungalow destroyed

ROTHESAY, N.B. - A Rothesay couple escaped from a burning home last night without harm thanks to a family pet.

The bungalow was gutted by flames.

Fire broke out just after midnight at 9 Colonsay Place, soon after the couple's dog woke them up which allowed them to get out of the house without harm.

Kennebecasis Valley Fire Department chief Larry Greer says the house was fully involved upon arrival along with a detached garage and vehicle in the driveway.

There were reports of an explosion as well, while Greer says it was likely something in the garage, possibly a propane cylinder.

Greer called for a full response and says a neighbouring house was a concern as well.

"We evacuated the people downwind of the structure and got some lines on quickly to protect those structures," Greer says.

Fire crews were on the scene throughout the night, while investigators will hunt for a cause this morning.
