SAINT JOHN, N.B.- 28 kilograms of cocaine was seized between two separate shipments of pineapples in August and October of last year.
The Canada Border Services Agency, in partnership with the RCMP and Saint John Police Force, discovered the drug stuffed fruit by using detector dogs and x-rays.
Superintendent Guy Rook of the RCMP says while this isn't the biggest seizure ever made in the port, it's going to lead to big ramifications for those involved. "What began with the discovery of cocaine in the Saint John Port has ultimately led to a large scale, organized drug trafficking ring with six people facing charges and large quantities of drugs seized", says Rook
The total value of the confiscated drugs is 3 point 5 million dollars.
Bruce Connell with the Saint John Police says this is a big bust, because while the drugs were headed for Ontario, they always find their way back to the streets of Saint John.
