FREDERICTON, NB - Premier David Alward says innovation and development of the natural gas industry can help rebuild New Brunswick's faltering economy.

During his annual state-of-the-province address last night, Alward weighed in on the controversial issue of shale gas development.

He said thousands of jobs could be created but only if the fracturing process is done responsibly.

"We believe new jobs and new growth can only be achieved without the sacrifice of our province's clean air, clean water and clean soil,'' noted Alward.

New Brunswick is on track for its fourth consecutive annual deficit and a net debt that's expected to top 10 billion dollars.

Alward says his government is continuing to look for ways to streamline government services and cut costs.

Alward says a new panel on accountability and responsible government will be unveiled next week.
