ST. GEORGE, NB - Construction begins today on the 580-million dollar Atlantic Gateway project, the largest financial highway undertaking in New Brunswick history.

Charlotte County MLA Rick Doucet was on hand for an official groundbreaking ceremony in St. George.

He tells us Route 1 is a key priority and the work being done will help save lives.

"This has been talked about for ages, this highway has been a treacherous stretch of road and it's something that's been on the books for a good many years, back in 2000 it was dropped and it's been sitting idle for about seven years," says Doucet.

The new infrastructure between Waweig and Lepreau, along with other major upgrades will help create 900 new jobs The project is expected to be completed in July 2013.
