Saturday quake off Vancouver Island not felt, says mayor of Tofino, B.C.

The Canadian Press Feb 04, 2012 17:49:00 PM

TOFINO, B.C. - There was an earthquake off British Columbia's west coast on Saturday, but it wasn't strong enough to be noticed by the mayor of one Vancouver Island community.

According to Natural Resources Canada, the magnitude-5.6 earthquake struck just after noon, about 179 kilometres southwest of Tofino, B.C.

The federal agency also reported that it did not expect a tsunami.

Tofino Mayor Perry Schmunk says he was on the beach at the time and didn't feel a thing.

Schmunk says that's in direct contrast to a September 2011 magnitude-6.4 earthquake.

Just after that quake, Schmunk says the ground turned and he felt like he was standing on a waterbed.
